July 4th is a time for food, family and fun. But before you light up the grill and set off your fireworks, you should first review some safety information that will help your weekend be remembered for the entertainment rather than an injury.
Grilling:
OSHA (The Occupational Safety and Health Administration) reports that gas grills were involved in an average of 6,200 home fires per year from 2004-2008, while charcoal grills were involved in an average of 1,300 per year during that period. To avoid any accidents that could result in personal injury or damage to property, NFPA (The National Fire Protection Association) recommends following these tips:
- Never grill inside.
- Make sure your grill isn’t next to play areas or where people are walking, and that the area above the grill is clear of tree branches.
- Establish a 3 foot radius around the grill where playing is not allowed.
- Clear away fat and grease from the grill often as it can ignite..
- Always be near your grill.
Fireworks:
Fireworks accidents are very common, usually resulting in injury to the hands or face of the operator. After confirming that fireworks are legal in your local area and state, you should follow these tips provided by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Council on Fireworks Safety:
- Follow the instructions on the fireworks exactly and cautiously.
- Never use fireworks indoors.
- Have a bucket of water nearby to place used fireworks in. This bucket can also be used if anything in the surrounding area ignites.
- Eye protection is heavily recommended for the person shooting the firework.
- Hand and arm protection is recommended as well.
Following these tips will help you have another memorable Fourth of July weekend.
