What You Need to Know About Hard Hats

Let’s talk hard hats. Shall we?

There are a few components to hard hats. There is the shell, the suspension system and then there are accessories which are optional.

Hard Hat Types. What is that?

Hard hats are classified in two classes: Type I and Type II.

  • Type I: The most common in the USA, mandates that hardhats must protect the wearer against penetration and impact to the crown only.
  • Type II: Protect against both lateral and crown injuries. Type II hard hats give better protection and, their use is actually getting more common in the US.

The above standards are set by ANSI. Do not wear hard hats that do not have an ANSI mark on the shell or suspension of the hard hat.

Suspension Systems Explained:

In addition to hard hat types, there is also the suspension which is the network of straps which hold the hat in place. Hard hat suspensions also help absorb and distribute potential impact. A few points here:

  • Suspensions come in four, six, or eight point systems. More points mean more distribution, and typically more comfort too.
  • All suspensions meet regulation standards.
  • To function properly, hard hats must fit snugly.

Here’s what you need to know about damage to your hard hat:

In order to maintain the quality and protection of your hardhat avoid painting and drilling the hard hat, it can weaken the structure.
