Dark is Dangerous: Avoiding Injury at Night

Dark is Dangerous: Avoiding Injury at Night

Construction work at night can be thrilling and empowering but it can also be quite dangerous. Here are some basic tips for preventing any injuries or fatalities while working at night.

Injuries are very common for people who work at night for a number of reasons.

Tiredness

Working late into night makes workers very drowsy, which leads to careless mistakes that result in injury or death.

Low-Visibility

The big one here. Reduced visibility because of lack of sunlight, makes working on the roads during much more difficult. The risk is two-fold here; both construction worker and motorists can't see as well. Another whammy, late night roads are typically empty roads which allows motorists to drive faster making the danger even greater!

It is necessary to do all that you can to protect yourself from these dangers. Workers should use reflective high visibility apparel. Ideally, the clothes should meet ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 Class 3 standards. High visibility apparel reduces most, if not all, of the risks associated with low visibility conditions. Hi Vis clothing is also effective in the fog where low visibility conditions are also present. Additionally, workers should wear hard hats and headlamps to augment any lights that may have been set up in the area.

Stay safe!
